How to handle critiscm – Stoicism

Stoicism teaches a rational and disciplined approach to handling criticism. Here’s how you can apply Stoic principles when facing criticism:

1. Control What You Can, Ignore What You Can’t

Epictetus: “Some things are up to us, and some things are not.” You can’t control others’ opinions, but you can control how you respond. Don’t waste energy trying to change what’s outside your control.

2. Detach Emotionally & Stay Rational

Marcus Aurelius: “You have power over your mind—not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength.” Instead of reacting emotionally, analyze the criticism objectively. Ask: Is it true? Is it useful?

3. View Criticism as an Opportunity for Growth

Seneca: “If a man knows not which port he sails, no wind is favorable.” Constructive criticism can help you improve. If there’s truth in it, use it to grow. If not, let it go.

4. Don’t Let Praise or Criticism Define You

Marcus Aurelius: “Everything we hear is an opinion, not a fact. Everything we see is a perspective, not the truth.” Your worth isn’t determined by what others say. Stay grounded in your values and purpose.

5. Respond with Calmness & Virtue

Epictetus: “It is not events that disturb people, it is their judgments concerning them.” Respond with patience, kindness, and wisdom. Don’t react in anger or defensiveness.

6. Remember That Critics Are Human Too

Marcus Aurelius: “Whenever someone has done wrong, remember they are just like you.” People criticize for various reasons—sometimes out of misunderstanding, jealousy, or their own struggles. Try to empathize rather than resent.

7. Practice Indifference to Harsh Criticism

Seneca: “A gem cannot be polished without friction, nor a man perfected without trials.” Develop resilience by not letting negative words shake you. The more indifferent you are to unjust criticism, the stronger you become.

In conclusion:  Stoicism teaches that criticism is inevitable, but your response is your choice. Accept what is helpful, ignore what is useless, and always act with wisdom and virtue.
