Reflection: The Burden of Ministry
Bible Reading: Nehemiah 1:4
“When I heard these things, I sat down and wept. For some days I mourned and fasted and prayed before the God of heaven.”
The “I” in this passage refers to Nehemiah. Who was Nehemiah? He was a key figure in the rebuilding of the walls of Jerusalem after the city was conquered by the
Babylonian Empire. Nehemiah served as the cupbearer to the king of Persia.
As a faithful Jew, Nehemiah deeply cared about the holy city, Jerusalem, and his
fellow people. The broken walls symbolized the destruction and downfall of God’s people, showing that they had not yet been fully restored after their exile in Babylon. The ruins also exposed Jerusalem to the threats of surrounding enemies. This situation deeply moved Nehemiah, causing him to mourn, weep, fast, and pray before God.
The moral decay of society has been prophesied in the Bible as something that will occur in the last days. The current state of humanity is much like the people of Sodom and Gomorrah during Lot’s time, who were ultimately judged by God.
Christians must have the same heart as Nehemiah—to grieve over the current state of the world, to pray for restoration, and to spread the gospel of God’s kingdom.
Sadly, many believers fail to see this reality. They are preoccupied with their own personal well-being and turn a blind eye to the state of the world today.
Prayer Focus:
Spreading the Gospel of God’s Kingdom throughout the Nations
- Pray that the proclamation of the gospel throughout Malaysia will proceed according to God’s will.
- Pray for evangelists and missionaries across the nation, that through them, God’s kingdom will be expanded, and more people will come to believe in Christ.
- Pray that believers will be living testimonies for the glory of God in Malaysia.
- Pray for the daily needs of evangelists across the country so that they will never lack anything.
